The Phillies’s Shortstop Jimmy Rollins Long for the New Year

In the coming of Christmas, the Phillies's shortstop Jimmy Rollins, sitting down for a radio interview, helped sell some six-game ticket plans. "I'm working on my six-pack," and Rollins said. "You can get yours at phillies.com."

The sales pitch is not what people care most, since fans are more interest in Rollins' health following a disappointing 2010. In this season he played just 87 games because of hamstring and calf injuries, and when he played, he struggled. He hit .243 with eight home runs, 41 RBIs and a .694 on-base-plus-slugging percentage, his lowest OPS since 2002 (.686). And this will be the final year of a six-year, $46.5 million contract. He is confident that he will bounce back.

Rollins is making some changes in order to stay healthy in 2011, chances that he said would be essential late in the season. There is a chance he might work out with teammate Ryan Howard in Florida in January. But even if their paths don't cross, he still plans to work out at IMG Academies in Bradenton, where numerous Phillies and other athletes work out before Spring Training.

A big bounce-back season will put Rollins in a good place, considering it is a contract year. He has said that he would like to remain in Philadelphia, but he also understands that his desires only go so far.

Rollins has been in the organization since the Phillies drafted him in the second round of the 1996 First-Year Player Draft, and he has been in the big leagues since 2000. Now it is maybe a hard time for him. Rollins needs to bring fans a healthy season and show us the excellent report to prove that he can play and still is the great one. Fortunately, he sounds confident he will.

Lewis and Smith Girt the Contract and a Happy Christmas

Nowadays, it is time that the Tribe needed to decide whether to offer pitcher Lewis a contract for 2011. And finally Jensen Lewis got the happy mood, and went to Quicken Loans Arena to witness NBA superstar LeBron James' first return trip to Cleveland as a member of the Miami Heat.

Because shortly before the deadline, and after Lewis watched James drop 38 points in a win over his former team in Cleveland, the pitcher avoided arbitration and signed a one-year, $650,000 contract with the Tribe. Right-hander Joe Smith also avoided arbitration by inking a one-year pact worth $870,000 plus incentives.

Lewis and Smith were among a group of six arbitration-eligible players for the Indians this offseason. The others include relievers Chris Perez and Rafael Perez, as well as outfielder Shin-Soo Choo and shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera. The Tribe tendered contracts to each rostered player affected by Thursday's deadline.

Lewis and Smith -- both 26 years old and both eligible for arbitration for the first time this offseason -- spent the bulk of last season in the Tribe's bullpen. Lewis posted a 2.97 ERA over 37 games and Smith fashioned a 3.83 ERA over 53 appearances for Cleveland.

Beyond addressing their own roster, the Indians were also keeping an eye on moves around baseball on Thursday night. One of Cleveland's priorities this winter is searching for help at third base and the tender deadline was expected to produce some possibilities.

Oakland non-tendered third baseman Edwin Encarnacion and Kansas City did the same with Josh Fields, making both players free agents. Encarnacion boasts solid power -- he belted 21 homers in just 367 at-bats for the Blue Jays last year -- but has struggled defensively. Fields missed most of last season due to right hip surgery.

Lewis and Smith could have a happy Christmas, and a steady season next year, what a happier thing?
